Switches are further divided into normal network switches and industrial ethernet switches. In order to meet the flexible and changeable industrial environment and anti-interference, there is a particularly large gap between industrial switches and normal switches. The function of the next industrial switch is more practical. Today, I will introduce the difference between industrial switches and ordinary switches in detail. Let’s take a look together!

What is an industrial switch

Industrial switches are also called industrial Ethernet switches. It is specially designed to meet the needs of flexible and changeable industrial applications and provides a cost-effective industrial Ethernet communication solution. Its networking mode is more focused on loop design. Industrial switches feature carrier-grade performance features to withstand harsh operating environments. The product series is rich and the port configuration is flexible, which can meet the needs of various industrial fields. The product adopts a wide temperature design, the protection level is not lower than IP40, and supports standard and private ring network redundancy protocols.

What is the difference between industrial switches and normal switches

1. Appearance

Industrial switches are generally aluminum alloy shells, while normal switches are generally plastic shells or sheet metal. Aluminum alloy shells can make industrial switches better heat dissipation and anti-corrosion.

2. Temperature

Industrial switches are generally wide temperature type (-40~85°C); while general switches are generally only 0~55°C

3. Protection level

Industrial switches are all IP40 or above, and normal switches are generally IP20

4. Electromagnetic environment

Industrial Ethernet switches have strong anti-electromagnetic interference capabilities, generally above EMC level 3, so using normal switches in some harsh environments will make the network work very unstable.

5. Working voltage

Industrial Ethernet switches have a wide range of working voltages and support a variety of options, such as -9~56VDC power supply, ADC220V power supply is optional, and normal switches have higher voltage requirements. normal switches basically have a single power supply, while industrial switches generally have dual power supplies to back up each other.

6. Installation method

Industrial Ethernet switches can be installed in DIN rails, racks, etc., and normal switches are generally in racks and desktops.

7. Heat dissipation method

Industrial Ethernet switches generally use fanless casings to dissipate heat, which are resistant to high and low temperatures, while normal switches use fans to dissipate heat, and the life of fans is generally 2-3 years, so the industrial life of industrial switches will be longer.

8. Service life

The service life of industrial switches is more than 10 years. But normal commercial switches have a service life of 3-5 years. Why look at the service life? Because this is related to the post-maintenance of the project. Therefore, it is recommended to use an industrial Ethernet switch in some cases where the use environment is relatively harsh and the data transmission is required to be stable.

Well, the above is the difference between ordinary switches and industrial switches. If you want to know more about industrial switches, welcome to consult.
